Vagueness is generally considered to be the absence of boundaries to the extension of vague words. This characteristic (which may be considered as a continuity or tolerance feature of these expressions) contrasts with the common expectation that language allows us to individuate objects and properties and to delineate specific states of the world (instead of others), this second aspect may be considered a presumption of discontinuity (or discreteness) in our use of words. The most common reactions to the above dilemma in philosophical literature are presented.

Abstract
Vagueness is generally considered to be the absence of boundaries to the extension of vague words. This characteristic (which may be considered as a continuity or tolerance feature of these expressions) contrasts with the common expectation that language allows us to individuate objects and properties and to delineate specific states of the world (instead of others), this second aspect may be considered a presumption of discontinuity (or discreteness) in our use of words. The most common reactions to the above dilemma in philosophical literature are presented.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
