For a long period between Hellenistic and Roman age the so called “Pudicitia type” has been one of the most popular and replicated formulas of female portraiture and personal representation in civic and funerary settings. Because of the multiple and generic nature of this body type, under the definition of “Pudicitia” falls a morphologically heterogeneous set of sculptures and reliefs sharing common recognizable gesture and attitude. Taking into account the variety of formal solutions and the subdivision into different phases of the development of its circulation, these pages aim to achieve a proposal for an overall interpretation of this typology.

Abstract

For a long period between Hellenistic and Roman age the so called “Pudicitia type” has been one of the most popular and replicated formulas of female portraiture and personal representation in civic and funerary settings. Because of the multiple and generic nature of this body type, under the definition of “Pudicitia” falls a morphologically heterogeneous set of sculptures and reliefs sharing common recognizable gesture and attitude. Taking into account the variety of formal solutions and the subdivision into different phases of the development of its circulation, these pages aim to achieve a proposal for an overall interpretation of this typology.
