The article focuses on the Italian foreign policy in the crucial years between Francesco Crispi's accession to power and the demise of fascism. The article affirms that Italy provides a clear confirmation of the profound impact that the motive of prestige and status can have on foreign policy, even to the point of putting in peril, as in the case of Italy "from Crispi to Mussolini", the very integrity and survival of the State. Moreover, the article argues that the Italian case does not fit neatly into the pattern of status and prestige policy outlined by the main IR theories which deal with prestige and status in world politics. More in particular, the article highlights the theoretical relevance of the Italian case with respect to such fundamental questions as the source of States' desire for prestige and status, the nexus between growth in capabilities and thirst for prestige, and finally the role played by war in prestige-oriented policies.
