Who are the Athenian ἐξηγηταί, and what was their official role? The analysis of the most significant evidence shows that there were two categories of exegetes; the Eumolpids, guardians of the rules concerning the Eleusinian Mysteries; and other exegetes (without qualification in the literary sources), experts of the so called “sacred law”. Their activity cannot be considered an “interpretation” in the modern sense of the word.
