Tiberio collezionista: le opere e i gusti artistici

This paper aims to give a lively portrait of Tiberius as a collector of Greek artworks, relying on literary sources (Pliny the Elder, Martial and Suetonius). The princeps successed in collecting Greek masterpieces of painting masters (Zeuxis, Nicias, Parrhasius) and renowed sculptors (Euphranor, Praxiteles and Lysippos), so that he should be seen as the last, leading exponent of Late Republican collectors in Rome. Tiberius’ tastes and salient features of his private gallery come out through the analysis of his favourite subjects (e.g. erotic paintings) as well as the contexts where masterpieces were arranged.
