Three topics of research are reviewed here. The first two concern the results from the archaeological excavations, while the third aims to define and interpret the nature of the settlement on the middle terrace of the Schlern plateau. Excavations on the eastern slopes of Peterbühel have revealed an area characterized by many structures, not all of them contemporary, with different functions. There are a water-drainage channel, a defensive system comprising several structures and a dwelling, all dating between the end of the Early Iron Age and the Romanizing period. The material culture, not all of which was found associated with structures, provides evidence of the area being occupied from the Mesolithic and, after a gap during the Neolithic and Copper Age, continuing throughout the Bronze and Iron Ages. In the last part of the paper a series of ideas are presented. Using as a basis the mapping and functional interpretation of the archaeological evidence relating to the Bronze and Iron Ages, these ideas concentrate on the development of the settlement system on the plateau and the role played by the fortified site on Peterbuhel.
