Data from the Institute of Legal Medicine of Milan demonstrate that the principal cause of violent death is related to traffic accidents which, in the Authors’ experiences, are the main proportion among the events defined as ‘major blunt traumas’. Data from scientific literature indicate that traffic injuries involving different organs and body districs, following traffic accidents are heterogeneous. Available studies on the relationship between specific patterns of the injuries and the different position of the victim within the vehicle at the moment of crash are difficult to evaluate. The present work first gives information on the incidence of traffic accidents in a large territory such as that of the city of Milan and the surrounding area and then provides a statistical analysis on the frequency of injuries involving the heart and large vessels. Moreover, the aim of the present work is to undertake a comparative and specific analysis on the relationship existing between anatomic injuries involving the cardiovascular system and the position of the victim within the vehicle (driver or passenger). The Authors performed a retrospective analysis on necroscopic cases studied at the Institute of Legal Medicine of Milan between January 2005 and January 2009 and selected car crash victims. Among the different findings which were analyzed particular attention was on the injuries involving cardiovascular pattern. Moreover a comparative analysis was also performed in order to find a specific correlation between type of injuries involving the cardiovascular system and position of the victim in the vehicle.
