In Africa South of the Sahara, the recent economic growth has produced several urban projects aimed at improving the quality of urban life and urban environment. These projects were not directed to the improvement of existing urban centers, but to the production of new high-quality spaces separated from the rest of the city and destined to the emerging political-economic elite. In some contexts the environmental issue has been used as a tool to remove the poorest part of the population from the strategic areas of the cities.

Abstract
In Africa South of the Sahara, the recent economic growth has produced several urban projects aimed at improving the quality of urban life and urban environment. These projects were not directed to the improvement of existing urban centers, but to the production of new high-quality spaces separated from the rest of the city and destined to the emerging political-economic elite. In some contexts the environmental issue has been used as a tool to remove the poorest part of the population from the strategic areas of the cities. This process of "ecological gentrification" has produced new forms of socio-spatial segregation.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
