Skin to Skin Contact (SSC) consists of placing naked newborn on mother’s chest; the baby is covered with a sheet or with the mother’s clothes. Skin to Skin Contact can be implemented in the immediate postpartum period, if the mother and baby are well; this contact can continue until mother and newborn wish. (NICE) Skin to Skin Contact encourages the breast crawl by the newborn and promotes early breastfeeding. (WIDSTROM 2011) Maternal breastfeeding is an importance issue when it comes to promoting e maintaining the global health of both mother and newborn. Breastfeeding is the best nutrition method to ensure a healthy growth and development of newborns and has a particular biological and emotional influence on both mothers and babies’ health. (ISTAT 2014) The way a woman experiences labor, delivery and postpartum influences her motivation towards breastfeeding. So, respecting the mother-infant dyad in the postpartum period, avoiding any form of interference from Skin to Skin Contact, can facilitate the initiation of breastfeeding. (ISTAT) In this paper, I’ll analyze the benefits of Skin to Skin Contact between mother and newborn in the postpartum period and the impact this practice has on breastfeeding for both woman and infant. The sample consist of women who have given birth vaginally vs women who have made a scheduled caesarean section.
