The essay concerns the ritual uses of coins in medieval and early modern Italy. The essay investigates this topic through an examination of the three following areas: coins as tokens of memory, offered in graves and in the foundations of buildings, or offered by pilgrims at the sacred shrine at the end of their journey; coins as relics of miracles; coins whose iconography was misinterpreted and read with the eyes of devotion.
