Unbelical cord blood is highly enriched for blood forming stell cells and offers advantages in the setting of allogenic transplantation. Cord blood has been used in over 30 000 transplants. Since the first umbilical cord blood transplant in 1988, cord blood has been established as an alternative and important source of emapoietic stem cells. Cord blood has several advantages over bone marrow and mobilized peripheral blood HSC for transplantation, including its availability, negligible risk to the donor, less stringent HLA matching requirements, and less chance of GVHD. Limitations of unbelical cord blood include insufficient quantity and quality, slow engraftment rates and the potential for transfer of genetically. This thesis aims at understanding what is the knowledge about cord blood collection among the female population. It aim at recognizing the opinion of midwives about unbelical cord blood and collection in connection with scientific evidence. 130 women and 35 midwives have been interviewed at the hospital Mangiagalli in Milan. As a result of this work, it has been discovered that women have little knowledge and awareness about this theme. It usually happens that women receive wrong information on this theme from midwives and heath experts. A high percentage of women never been discussed this issue; most of them have been received details from internet and their friends. Considering that the 39, 23 % of interviewed women answered that the issue was addressed, the 54, 90% addressed the issue during birthing classes and the remaining percentage with doctor, during labour or at councelling center. Regarding the midwives, it has emerged from the data that a high percentage of them support the collection of cord blood but not all midwives consider it necessary. Midwives appear to be informed about cord blood collection and inclusion and exclusion criteria. In conclusion it would be helpful to present this theme during birthing classes and raise the awareness of the effectiveness and benefits of this method among women and midwives. Last thing, the creation of an informative leaflet in order to raise women’s awareness and interest to the cord blood collection.

Abstract
