From the treasure chest to the pope’s soup : Coins, mints and the Roman Curia (1150–1305)

This paper examines various aspects of the use of money and coins : I. Money of account; II. The importance of coins and of numismatic research; III. Brief outline of monetary development in Europe (1150–1305); IV. Coins used and coins produced in Rome; V. Coins arriving to the Roman Curia: taxes, donations and pilgrims; VI. Ritual uses of coins and a papal soup. Written evidence will be compared with the coins actually produced in various mints, and with evidence from finds and hoards. A special attention will be given to the need of a correct identification of coin-names in documents.
