INTRODUCTION. The maxillary sinus is a wide cavity contiguous with the lateral side of the posterior maxilla. Because of this particular anatomic situation, the integrity of this cavity may be violated during dental procedures. If not correctly performed, endodontic and periodontal treatments as well as surgical procedures (challenging dental extractions, insertion of endo-osseous implants, cistectomy, endodontic surgery, reconstructive surgery of the posterior maxilla) may endanger Schneider's membrane integrity causing oro-antral communications, intrasinusal dislocation of foreign bodies and sinusitis. The treatment of sinus pathologies may be surgical (Caldwell-Luc technique) or endoscopical (FESS) thanks to the opening into the middle nasal meatus. Sometimes a combined approach of oral and ENT surgeons is required. CONCLUSIONS. The Authors report both surgical and endoscopic technique comparing their results in the treatment of sinus pathologies.
