Protection and management of groundwater require an integrated approach which mixes information deriving from monitoring hydrochemical characteristics, aquifer hydrogeology, use and type of soil. This approach has been applied to the study of groundwater resources of porous aquifers of the Lombardy plain - Northern Italy and it follows three main steps: 1) groundwater quality characterization, 2) analysis of surface contaminant charge and of protective capability of soils 3) comparison of the data obtained in the first two steps with groundwater vulnerability. In the first step chemical analysis performed through the regional monitoring network, derived from public and private wells, have been analysed. Attention was concentrated on nitrates only, which are the most common contaminant in groundwater of the study area since many years continuously monitored in a great number of wells. Groundwater hydrochemical data were used to determine the quality data (chemical status) of the aquifer according to the national legislation, D.Lgs 152/99; this set of data allowed to identify contaminated critical areas in relation to anthropogenic activities. In the second step soil infiltration capability was analysed together with contaminant superftcial charge to identify areas where contaminant could easily reach unconfined aquifers. In the last step results obtained in the first two steps were compared with aquifers vulnerability, pointing out causes and explanations where there wasn''t agreement between vulnerable areas and impacted groundwater, and correlating source oJ contamination with groundwater contamination. The proposed methodology represents a useful support for regional scale studies concerning non point contaminant sources and migration and provide an effective guide for groundwater resources and management and for planning monitoring action and soil use destination.
