Equality of Opportunity as a Standard of Social Justice: Conceptions and ustification. The idea that people should have equal opportunity at least at the beginning of their lives is nowadays the object of a wide consensus. What explains such a consensus is in part the ambiguity of the concept of equality of opportunity. This paper provides an analysis of that concept and, after distinguishing different conceptions of equality of opportunity, argues for one of them – effective structural equality of social opportunity - as a standard of justice on the basis of a theory of justice that has in the principles of (first- or self-) property, equality and responsibility its basic elements.

Abstract
Equality of Opportunity as a Standard of Social Justice: Conceptions and ustification. The idea that people should have equal opportunity at least at the beginning of their lives is nowadays the object of a wide consensus. What explains such a consensus is in part the ambiguity of the concept of equality of opportunity. This paper provides an analysis of that concept and, after distinguishing different conceptions of equality of opportunity, argues for one of them – effective structural equality of social opportunity - as a standard of justice on the basis of a theory of justice that has in the principles of (first- or self-) property, equality and responsibility its basic elements.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
