Abstract

Exempla are investigated of Ambrose's De officiis, book III. Ambrose's different way of reusing some selected Ciceronian exempla within the new Christian (con)text sets these materials in competition with their alleged scriptural counterpart, which are usually asserted to outdo the Ciceronian ones. Such an investigation might shed light on some aspect of Ambrose's intended public.
