Ascoli e la linguistica europea

The scientific discourse between Graziadio Isaia Ascoli and the European linguistics is a constituent of his formation during his youth and also a constant feature of his whole work. The international nature of his studies is an aim pursued as the way to claim originality of thought on an equal footing with foreign interlocutors and, despite the inevitable and privileged reference to the German science, a more European nature is revealed. The way his contemporaries received his contribution to the linguistic studies and the numerous recognitions shown by academic circles are evidence of the international feature which can be found in Ascoli’s work. However, the international nature in Ascoli’s writings is above all the result of the discourse with the main exponents of the linguistic debate of those years and in particular with the protagonists of the previous generation.
