Photoemission measurements at hv values covering the 5p excitation edges in solid Eu and Yb, allow to obtain information on the electron states in the rare earth divalent metals, and to identify a very efficient decay channel for the 5p core hole which accounts for the 5p near edge structures in the optical absorption spectra.
