Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a lifesaving procedure used to treat patients with severe acute respiratory failure and/or cardiac failure refractory to conventional treatments. During ECMO blood flows through an artificial lung, which loads oxygen and removes carbon dioxide. To support the lungs, blood is drained conventionally from the venous system and reinfused into the venous system, while to support the heart, blood is drained from the venous system and reinfused into the arterial system.
