This essay addresses some key issues in the self-presentation and construction of the London-based Chinese poet, film director and novelist Xiaolu Guo. Over the last decade she has acquired a prominent position among the younger representatives of the Chinese diaspora in Europe. Taking its lead from Guo’s 2014 PEN Lecture “Waiting for a Second Coming”, and drawing as well on her 2014 experimental novel ‘I Am China’, this article aims to discuss the connective role of transculturality and translation in her works, and the way this approach reflects on the current debate on world literature and the relation between art, politics and dissidence against the backdrop of an ever more interconnected world.
