Drammi, tragedie, musiche e balli per Costantino il Grande

The essay examines some theatrical and musical plays that contributed to establish the figure of Constantine on the Italian scene at the turn of the nineteenth century and into its first half. The emperor became the subject of a vast body of theatrical productions that focused on his public deeds and, above all, on his private vicissitudes. In fact, the aspects – some of them purely fictional – that became the favorite subject for dramatists and librettists were those related to his private life, such as his the relationship with his second wife, Fausta, with Flavius Crispus, the child of his first marriage, and his father in law Maximian, Fausta’s father. For this reason, his figure has been celebrated and applauded throughout Italy for three centuries, contributing to the creation of the myth of Constantine the Great.

Il saggio prende in esame alcuni fra i lavori teatrali e musicali che hanno contribuito ad affermare la figura di Costantino sulle scene italiane, tra la fine del XVII e i primi cinquanta anni del XIX secolo. L’imperatore diviene il protagonista di una vasta produzione teatrale dedicata a mettere in scena le sue vicende pubbliche e, soprattutto, private. Infatti, gli aspetti - a volte fantasiosi - che diventano soggetti prediletti di tragediografi e poeti per musica sono quelli collegati alla sua vita privata, ai rapporti con la seconda moglie Fausta, con il figlio di primo letto Flavio Crispo e con il suocero Massimiano, padre di Fausta. Anche per questa ragione, la sua figura è celebrata e applaudita in tutta Italia per tre secoli, contribuendo alla creazione del mito di Costantino il Grande.
