Loci e imagines : dall’Arte della memoria ai Sistemi di Informazione Geografica (GIS)

The system links information elements, i.e. descriptive metadata, to images that have a precise meaning and a precise spatial position. These words seem to describe the Google Maps service, used every day by millions of people, or one of the many GPS navigation systems installed in our cars, and in a sense it is true. It is also true, however, that these words could describe the techniques used by ancient orators to sharpen their memory and have a clear idea of the path they have to do with their thought and words. This research aims to detect the possible relationships between the human need to represent and mentally locate information and the Geographic Information Systems.

Il sistema collega degli elementi informativi, dei metadati descrittivi, a delle immagini che hanno un preciso significato e una precisa posizione spaziale. Queste parole sembrano descrivere il servizio Maps di Google, usato ogni giorno da milioni di persone, oppure uno dei tanti sistemi di navigazione GPS installati nelle nostre automobili, e in un certo senso questo può essere vero. È vero anche, tuttavia, che queste parole possono descrivere le tecniche utilizzate dagli oratori dell’antichità per affinare la loro memoria ed avere ben chiaro in mente il percorso che ritenevano di dover compiere col loro pensiero e con le loro parole. Questa ricerca si propone di rilevare le relazioni tra il bisogno di rappresentare e localizzare mentalmente le informazioni e i Sistemi Informativi Geografici.
