In this paper the following topics concerning guardianship in ancient societies broadly conceived (Near Eastern, Greek, Jewish, Hellenistic, Roman as well as Armenian), are highlighted: 1) the importance of institutional mechanisms; 2) historical development; 3) the gap between legal rules and social practice; 4) the ultimate objectives underlying the different forms of guardianship in ancient societies; 5) the interaction between different legal cultures. The question why guardianship as an institution developed in the Greek and Romam world is also explored.
