Social business plan simulation : the case of Dynamo Camp

This chapter tells the story of Vincenzo Manes whose goal was to create a holding of non-profits with the aim of playing a more active role as a philanthropist targeting high-potential social enterprises. The philosophy rested on the premise that the best investments in solving social problems required more than money. Rather, combinations of financial and non-financial resources, active involvement, strategic assistance at different levels, and visible endorsements could make the difference in terms of the ability of a social entrepreneurial venture to attain expected social change objectives. Fondazione Dynamo was created explicitly to apply the venture capital model to the nonprofit sector. This chapter describes the foundation’s project to establish “Hole in the Wall Camps” in Italy. This Association is a non-profit umbrella organization with a family of camps for children with serious and life-threatening medical conditions.
