This study reports results of the content analysis performed on 687 free comments given by Italian nurses to the final open-ended question included in the NEXT (Nurses' Early Exit Study) follow-up questionnaire. The main finding was the incongruence between nurses' expectations about their professional role and patients' centrality, and the institutional constraints. These results can support development and implementation of knowledge-based actions aimed at preventing premature departure from the nursing profession
