This study offers a renewed framing, both in breadth and complexity, of the relationship between poetry and politics in Dante’s Italy. On the methodological level, the book is characterized by an interdisciplinary and comparative approach: the author highlights the distinctive features of early Italian political poetry. At the same time, the book also brings out the close relations of the textual corpus examined with the contemporary traditions (in Latin, French, Occitan, Catalan). Throughout, literary analysis is accompanied by careful reconstruction of the historical and cultural contexts in which Dante and the poets of his time worked. On the literary side, starting from a passage of Dante’s 'De vulgari eloquentia' Paolo Borsa investigates the absence in the Italian lyric tradition of a specific line of war poetry, on the model of the Occitan troubadour Bertran de Born. In terms of opening up the historical context, Borsa emphasizes how the international events related to Charles of Anjou provided a decisive impulse to the development of a peculiar tradition of political poetry in the Italian vernacular.
