Along with other fragments now scattered in different museums worldwide, these three fragments belonged to the floor of a Roman villa in the ancient city of zeugma (today’s Belkis, Turkey). The mosaic consisted of a central panel featuring Poseidon while leading a chariot on a sea inhabited by marine creatures, and of a sumptuous outer frame, showing a strip of plant volutes with cupid hunters and another strip with pairs of sinusoids (an interlaced pattern design) with circles enclosing female busts, the personifications of the Roman provinces.
