In school year 2015-16 a new compliance program was designed to implement physical education (PE) in primary school with the support of movement experts (D.G.R. N. 3953/2015). The intervention was aimed at promoting children’s age-related development in four different fundamental areas: morphofunctional, emotional, cognitive and social. The project involved 76,566 children, 2,267 of which were disabled. Two hundred and forty-nine movement experts, graduated in Sports and Physical Education, cooperated with teachers during curricular PE hours and assisted them in planning and guiding 20 lessons. The training of the experts was provided by five Lombard Universities (Catholic University of the Sacred Heart; University of Milan; University of Brescia; University of Pavia; University of Insubria) in partnership with CRL CONI – Lombardy Regional Committee and was based on two major formative modules: teaching of motor and physical activities in the age range 5-12 years, and monitoring of physical and motor fitness, self-efficacy, enjoyment, and physical activity habits. Results revealed an average improvement of physical and motor skills by 5%, as well as a general consensus of school principals, teachers, and parents to support in-school PE interventions for children’s wellbeing.
