Nemo’s Garden® is a prototype to create an alternative system of agriculture, especially dedicated to those areas where environmental conditions, economical or morphologic reasons make plants growth extremely difficult. Technology developed in the framework of Nemo’s Garden Project consists of underwater greenhouses (the biospheres), air-filled domes made of acrylic (transparent plastic material) that are anchored to the bottom of the sea: they hold approximately 2000 liters of air and are anchored to the bottom of the sea by 28 chains, floating at different depths. Salvia elegans Vahl, also known as “pineapple sage”, has been grown inside a biosphere, both in pot and in a hydroponic system, to evaluate the influence of the artificial subaqueous environment on Salvia micromorphology and volatiles emission profiles (VOC) compared to control potted samples grown in a standard greenhouse. These parameters have been analysed to assess the biospheres viability as an alternative method to classic farming, namely to obtain a product with comparable properties.
