The Alitalia issue was the most widely covered issue by the Italian television news networks during the 2008 General elections campaign. This brief article focuses on the predominant frames in the issue coverage by the two major competing news broadcasts, Tg1 and Tg5. A qualitative analysis is performed through four different definitions of frames (frames as valence, categorization, emphasis, connectivity), showing the meta-communicative and inherently partisan nature of Italian television news frames.

Abstract

The Alitalia issue was the most widely covered issue by the Italian television news networks during the 2008 General elections campaign. This brief article focuses on the predominant frames in the issue coverage by the two major competing news broadcasts, Tg1 and Tg5. A qualitative analysis is performed through four different definitions of frames (frames as valence, categorization, emphasis, connectivity), showing the meta-communicative and inherently partisan nature of Italian television news frames.
