The lex Hortensia was a law submitted for comitia approval in 287 BCE by the plebeian dictator Q. Hortensius, through which it was established that plebiscites would be valid for the entire Roman population, having equal status of law. A small group of ancient sources agree on the description of its contents. The difference between the lex Valeria Horatia de plebiscitis, dated 449 BCE, the lex Publilia Philonis de plebiscitis, dated 339 BCE, and the lex Hortensia is also examined.
