EI3 entry for Hilāl Al-Ṣābiʾ (359–448/970–1056), a Baghdādī bureaucrat and historian. He belonged to a family of learned men, originally from the Sabian city of Ḥarrān, who had served at the court in Baghdad in various capacities since the reign of al-Muʿtaḍid (279–89/892–902). In his writings (al-Wuzarāʾ, ed. Farrāj, 170), Hilāl mentions working directly under his grandfather Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm (d. 384/994), who had headed the palace chancery since 349/960. Given Hilāl’s date of birth, this must have happened after the deat.
