Atomic-scale defects such as carbon atom vacancies and neutral impurities such as adatoms play an important role in graphene because of the huge impact they have on its low-energy electronic structure. This chapter summarizes the current understanding of the effects they have on the structural, electronic, magnetic, chemical, and transport properties of this material. The emphasis is on a few theoretical aspects that help to critically examine available experimental data.
