In recent years the impact of the economic crisis on the labour markets of Western countries has been deeply analysed, but its effect on the labour market condition of immigrants is not yet entirely clear. On one hand, immigrants tend to enter into labour-intensive job positions, such as construction and manufacturing, which have been strongly affected by the crisis. On the other hand, other elements go in the opposite direction. Immigrant women, for example, are concentrated in the domestic and care jobs which have been affected to a lesser extent of the recession. The aim of this paper is to analyse the impact of the economic crisis on the employment status of the immigrant and native population throughout the analysis of Labour Force Survey data (2005-2012). Two aspects of employment status have been analysed: a) employment opportunities and b) the chances of avoiding the unskilled urban working class. Moreover, this work also studies how the differences between immigrants and natives during the economic crisis will change according to the region of residence and gender.
