Calprotectin is a calcium and zinc binding protein derived from neutrophils and monocytes. It is a valuable marker in the diagnosis, monitoring and determining the prognosis of commonly encountered gastroenterological conditions, but mainly gastrointestinal cancer and chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. Faecal calprotectin, in particular, has been regarded as a promising marker of gastrointestinal cancer, but available data are still conflicting. On the contrary its usefulness in the diagnosis and follow-up of Crohn's disease and, particularly, ulcerative colitis has been confirmed in several studies.
