Gastro-esophageal reflux disease is a chronic, highly prevalent condition characterized by different symptoms and degrees of mucosal damage, related to the reflux of the gastric content into the esophagus. Aim of medical therapy is to control the symptoms, heal esophageal lesions, and avoid their evolution into more severe forms. Several drugs have been introduced in the last years in the treatment of the disease, with proton pump inhibitors playing a leading role. Different therapeutic protocols have been proposed according to the severity of symptoms and esophageal lesions. Recently, endoscopic techniques to correct gastro-esophageal reflux have been launched, but at this time they should be considered only experimental.
