The author examines the relationship between the text of the Virgilian cento composed by the poetess Proba (4th) and the ‘variae lectiones’ we find in two of the most ancient Virgil’s manuscripts (Palatinus and Mediceus). Due to the ‘contaminatio’ often occurring both in Virgil’s and in Proba’s manuscript tradition, it is impossible to connect Proba’s Virgil to either of the above mentioned manuscripts. Nonetheless Proba’s cento represents a quite relevant episode of Virgil textual and cultural Fortleben in Late Antiquity.

Abstract
The author examines the relationship between the text of the Virgilian cento composed by the poetess Proba (4th) and the ‘variae lectiones’ we find in two of the most ancient Virgil’s manuscripts (Palatinus and Mediceus). Due to the ‘contaminatio’ often occurring both in Virgil’s and in Proba’s manuscript tradition, it is impossible to connect Proba’s Virgil to either of the above mentioned manuscripts. Nonetheless Proba’s cento represents a quite relevant episode of Virgil textual and cultural Fortleben in Late Antiquity.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
