This essay reconstructs the circumstances leading to the publication of the article 'Italian Tragedy', which appeared anonymously in the October 1820 issue of the 'Quarterly Review' as a review of three contemporary tragedies: Ugo Foscolo’s 'Ricciarda' and Silvio Pellico’s 'Francesca da Rimini', both celebrated as excellent examples of the new Italian tragedy, and Alessandro Manzoni’s 'The Count of Carmagnola', criticised for being a 'feeble tragedy'. Traditionally attributed to Henry Hart Milman, the article appears to be the outcome of a collaborative effort that involved Foscolo, John Cam Hobhouse, John Murray and, to a lesser extent, Lord Byron. The reconstruction of this collaboration enables one to speculate on the reasons for which the 'Ricciarda', completed in 1813, was first published only in 1820, in Britain. In the second part the essay focuses on the considerable debate that arose on tragedy in the main French, Italian, German, and British literary journals in the Twenties of the 19th century: while Manzoni's tragedies and new poetics received growing critical acclaim, Foscolo's 'Ricciarda' was consigned to rapid oblivion.

Abstract
In the second part the essay focuses on the considerable debate that arose on tragedy in the main French, Italian, German, and British literary journals in the Twenties of the 19th century: while Manzoni's tragedies and new poetics received growing critical acclaim, Foscolo's 'Ricciarda' was consigned to rapid oblivion.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
