This paper investigates the general impulse to classify, categorise, and inventory which can be seen across all aspects of Abbasid cultural life in the 4th/10th century. Different aspects of this phenomenon have been studied separately under such labels as encyclopedism and classification of science. Here, a wider perspective is attempted, identifying and reviewing the characteristics which make an object – be it physical or conceptual – well organised.

Abstract
