The author argues that Dickens's contruction of landscape within his narrative discourse was affected by contemporary mass visual culture. Analysing "The Old Curiosity Shop," and other works by Dickens, such as the travelogue "American Notes" the essay suggests that a visual syntax derived from the magic lantern practice and experience influences the presentation of landscape as well as the construction of the plot.
