The article examines the connection of text and images, specifically religious images printed as engravings in Ukraine during the second half of the seventeenth century, by taking as a case study Lazar Baranovych’s Truby sloves propovidnykh na narochityia dni prazdnikov (Trumpets of the Homiletic Words for Major Feast Days, 1674), a richly illustrated collection of homilies dedicated to Tsar Aleksei Mikhailovich and originally intended for sale in Muscovy. My main purpose is to situate the mechanisms regulating the image-text encounter within the wider context of ‘sacred emblematics’ and ‘illustrated sacred discourse’ in Late Renaissance and Baroque Europe.
