This is the first book of synthesis dedicated to medieval Italian coins as historical sources, but it is not meant as a handbook: the author proposes her ideas but offers a rich apparatus of footnotes and bibliography encouraging further reading on debated or unexplored topics. After an historical profile of Italian coinage from the 'fall' of the Roman Empire to 1500, other chapters deal with the history of studies, with written and numismatic evidence and how to interpret them, with mints and technology, forgeries and imitations, metrology, iconography, ritual uses, relationship between local and foreign coins. a number of appendixes complete the book.
