Applications of general anesthesia in dentistry. Operative protocols for the treatment of non compliant patients in a single surgical session. Purpose. The aim of this paper is to present a clinical protocol designed to provide complete dental treatment to non compliant patients via a single session under general anesthesia. Materials and methods. We present a practical protocol based on a literature review and on the experience acquired by the authors after several years of implementing general anesthesia to treat non compliant dental patients in a single surgical session. Through a case presentation, a detailed analysis of the main advantages, limits, and disadvantages of complete dental treatments in a single surgical session is provided. The need to complete the diagnostic process and treatment plan during the anesthesia session is also evaluated. Results and conclusions. Despite clinical variability does not allow to define a specific guideline applicable to all clinical cases, the indication we provided allows to efficiently define a valid treatment plan, with respect to the endodontic, conservative, periodontal, prosthetic and surgical approaches.
