The world of information “with Chinese characteristics” is a nuanced landscape where censorship, advertisement, money and ethics are interlocked factors that intermittently prevail, in a system that has undergone tremendous changes and challenges in only three decades. From the era of compulsory sessions of paper readings in the 1960s to the global market revolution of the 21st century, the media in the People’s Republic have experienced a radical transformation driven by the economic reforms; and yet they have stayed the same. Touching on investigative journalism and reality shows, discussing professional corruption and microblogs activism, the book aims to tracks down the evolution of China’s media in the reform era. In doing so, it attempts to cast light on an elusive and multi-faceted realm, where political control is still a main obstacle to freedom of expression, but is not the only one.
