The comedy Andria by Terence has two finales in the original manuscript. Having ascertained the authenticity of each of them we can analyse the second finale where a "spondere filiam" is described that is different from the typical marriage proposals of the day. Through these literary sources it is possible to identify the earliest, original character of the "sponsio".

Abstract

The comedy Andria by Terence has two finales in the original manuscript. Having ascertained the authenticity of each of them we can analyse the second finale where a "spondere filiam" is described that is different from the typical marriage proposals of the day. Through these literary sources it is possible to identify the earliest, original character of the "sponsio".
