The paper discuss the classic question of why Western Europe industrialized from the late eighteenth century and Asia did not. Were Europe and Asia more alike than different in early-modern age, as some historians suggest? Or did «Great divergence» occur because Europe had different competitive pressures that produced varied state policies? The seminar aims to present the current historical debate on the different path of growth and to offer some possible readings of economic development stressing the role of the state (trade, war, fiscal state and economic policies) in early-modern Europe.
