Philosophy and Theology in Today’s Europe. Evaluation of the current Situation The relation between philosophy and theology represented and still represents a fundamental trait of western civilization and tradition. After a large history of conflicts, through which philosophy and theology shaped their own identity out of a common mold, it followed a pacification between the two based on mutual ignoring. Later on, against a different cultural background, in which the mere dichotomy between mythos and logos has been overcome, philosophy and theology both abandoned the claim of an absolute knowledge. They came then close once again and recognized their mutual implying. Nevertheless, it is important that this should not happen by eliminating, but rather by valorizing their own difference, thus constituting a model for a dialogue between different realities (subjects and objects) that does not tend towards their assimilation.
