Occhialini's training in physics is analysed. Three main physicists contributed: his father Augusto Occhialini and, indirectly, Battelli; Bruno Rossi and the other physicists of the Arcetri school; Patrick Blackett and the groups of the Cavendish. His engagement in the researches on cosmic rays led him to the great discoveries of the pair production and of the cosmic rays showers made with Blackett.
