Storie di testi negli archivi degli editori

Editorial archives are a precious source for literary scholars, whether they are keenest on the birth of a text or whether they are looking into the history of a text through the editing process that takes it to the reader, or finally whether they investigate the dimension of reading a text that has turned into a veritable book. While keenness on the birth of a text may give pride of place, through the readers’ feedback and correspondence, to what the editor demanded of the writer or what the editor actually did to the text, a review of the drafting processes may give prominence to the editors-in-chief ’s feedback and corrections, along with the last changes made by the author himself to his own drafts. Choices about the physical appearance the book will have may shed light on the construction of the text that the editor suggests to its potential buyers and readers. Through a number of examples, this essay provides food for thought about the relations between the text, the editing process and the book, hinting at the fact that reading takes places on the “literary object” built by the editor, i.e. the texts and the features it takes once edited, and that editorial archives are essential to outline its history.

L‘archivio editoriale è una fonte preziosa per gli studiosi di letteratura, sia quando pongono al centro del loro interesse un testo nella sua genesi, sia quando esaminano la storia di un testo dentro il percorso editoriale che lo porta al lettore, sia quando, infine, indagano nella dimensione della lettura di un testo ormai diventato libro. Se l’attenzione alla genesi del testo può portare in primo piano, attraverso i pareri di lettura e gli epistolari, gli interventi richiesti dall‘editore allo scrittore, o quelli direttamente condotti in sede editoriale sotto forma di editing, l‘indagine sui processi redazionali può mettere in risalto i suggerimenti e le correzioni dei redattori, insieme con le ultime varianti poste dallo stesso autore sulle bozze. Le scelte riguardanti l‘aspetto fisico che il libro assumerà possono rivelare l‘interpretazione del testo indicata dall‘editore ai potenziali acquirenti e lettori. Attraverso una serie di esempi, il saggio introduce una riflessione sui rapporti testo – lavorazione editoriale – libro suggerendo come la lettura si svolga sull‘“oggetto letterario” costruito dall‘editore, cioè sul testo e i caratteri che assume nell‘edizione che lo trasmette, e come gli archivi editoriali siano fondamentali per delinearne la storia.
