Abstract

This paper seeks to trace the literary fortune of Garcilaso's Sonnet XIV and to explain the reasons of its enduring fame. The analysis focuses on some Baroque and Neoclassical Poetics, the imitations among Italian poets of the Arcadia and some translations in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, in Italy and England. The study the influence of this sonnet offers illustrations of a model of rhetorical device and discursive perspicuity which remained long in vogue.
